ESL students gather in the library to discuss geographySince 2002, part of Meadowbrook Community CARE's history has been the facilitation, support and direction regarding those with English speaking needs.  Whether students are visiting the US or have recently called Seattle their new home, we have partnered with Literacy NOW to recruit and support volunteer teachers who are willing and have a passion for supporting those with this special need.

Wayne and Nancy, our ESL instructorsClassroom instructors Wayne F.(intermediate/advanced) and Nancy A. (beginning) have worked tirelessly and with great passion and conviction to be the face of Meadowbrook Community CARE (MC2) over the many years. Thoughtful discussions framed as TALK TIME as well as hands-on experiences like reading and then baking/cooking a recipe or field trips to experience all things AMERICAN have kept our offerings to the public fresh, welcoming and exciting. Both teachers commit to two days a week with seasonal sessions built on a 6 week schedules and then returning after two week breaks.  Summer time is usually a time away but checking the calendar  can reveal a Talk Time bult in depending on instructor schedules.

Once this part of our ESL outreach was established, a member of Maple Leaf Lutheran Church, Bev C, put together a rotating quilting/ESL curriculum that created a unique and hands-on class room experience that gathers in the Community Hall once a week.  Table runners, Holiday stockings, quillts, baby quilts, aprons are some the fun projects over the years that have been produced by this great opportunity.

Of course, one of the fun aspects of the end of a six week session is the sharing of native foods with all in the classroom.  Food from all over the world is shared for a day and everyone goes away for a new appreciation for each others culture and a FULL BELLY of a delicious meal!
